How to join Indian Army as an Officer

How to join Indian Army as an Officer

“How to join Indian Army as an Officer” is the question that arises in the minds of many army freaks who want to serve the Indian Army. Let’s try to find out the answer to this frequently asked question.

Information on Indian Army

Information on Indian Army starts with the fact that it is one of the largest land-based forces in the world. It has fought four major wars and engaged in various counter-terrorism operations in and outside India since the country’s independence. Most of the operations led by the Indian army are successful due to its battle-hardened nature.

The tasks of Indian army are not only confined to protecting borders or eliminating terrorists in operations but also to actively participate in several emergency humanitarian relief operations such as rescue in various disasters such as floods, cyclones, earthquakes and many more to provide aid to its fellow citizens.

Apart from performing these duties, the Indian army is also the largest contributor to the UN Peacekeeping Missions. So far our army has taken part in more than 43 UN missions in different countries across the globe such as Sudan, Angola, Lebanon, Congo, Sri Lanka and many more countries.

The Indian army is the largest volunteer army in the world as the eagerness among youth to join this elite force is enormous and the desire for that olive green uniform is tremendous which is increasing at a rapid pace. If you haven’t decided to join this elite force then these important pieces of information on  Indian army will surely force you to.

Recruitment in Indian Army

For many of us, recruitment in Indian army or simpler terms joining Indian army is not just a profession but a sheer passion. Also, it is a matter of pride and honour to serve your country at the highest level that isn’t available at any other place.

To join Indian army and become a commissioned officer, you have to understand the commissioning system that is followed to recruit new officers in this prestigious force. This system is categorized based on the tenure of your service in the army. It is divided into two categories:

Permanent Commission (PC)

Permanent Commission in the Indian army is granted through Indian Military Academy (IMA) in Dehradun & Officer Training Academy (OTA-G) in Gaya. While opting for this commission you are looking for a permanent career in the army i.e. till the retirement as the tenure in PC is generally more than 20 years of active service.

You should know the importance of this commission as all senior ranked officers in the Indian Army are through this very commission. You have to be from PC to attain a higher rank in the Indian army.

Earlier PC was granted only to the males but now after the recent Supreme Court order, our female officers are also eligible for it. In this decision, our supreme court has directed the army to grant Permanent Commission to female soldiers in non-combat roles. This is one of most awaited reforms in Indian army since its inception.

Short Service Commission (SSC)

Short Service Commission is the other commission of the two granted in Indian Army. It is granted through Officer training Academy (OTA-C) in Chennai. In SSC you are looking to serve the army for a brief period of 10 years which can be extended to four more years on request. An officer is free to leave after 10 years of active service in the army.

You can see an officer commissioned through SSC will find it difficult to go beyond the rank of Lieutenant Colonel at max. So those who are eying the higher ranks should choose it carefully. Though, it is the best option for those aspirants who want to serve the army for a short duration to pursue their other life goals.

As told in the above paragraph, earlier Short Service Commission was the only option for female candidates but now they too have their share of choices under PC.

These two commissions are granted through two different entries:

1) Written Entry (With written exam)

2) Direct Entry (Without written exam)

Written Entry

In a written entry, a candidate has to go through a three-stage selection process. The first of the three stages is a written exam which is usually conducted by UPSC (Union Public Service Commission) or by Indian Army itself.

If you clear this written exam, then you have to go for the second stage called SSB (Service Selection Board) where your personality will be assessed in and out for 5 days.

After the recommendation from SSB, you have to go for the final stage i.e. medicals where you will have your whole body assessed according to prescribed military standards. Based on these three stages a final merit list is prepared in accordance with the published vacancies for that particular course.

In this entry, the final merit list is prepared according to your marks in the written exam and SSB process while medicals are of qualifying nature. Both PC and SSC commissions are available under this written entry process.

Direct Entry

In Direct entry, the written exam is not present, unlike written entry where you have to clear the written exam, here in this entry you have to just clear the other two stages to get your name in the final merit list.

In this entry you will get your call for SSB based on your marks obtained in either 12th class and marks in graduation or Post-graduation Course depending upon your choice of exam and this entry is fully conducted by the Indian army. Here, the final merit list is prepared according to your marks in SSB while medicals are here too is of qualifying nature. Both PC and SSC commissions are available under this direct entry process.

Territorial Army (TA)

Territorial Army Entry is a special entry scheme by the army to accommodate those working professionals who want to serve in the army but don't want to quit their job in which they are already working. TA wants these interested candidates to be self-employed in a profession outside the army as they will serve in the TA for a brief time a year i.e. 3 months to 9 months a year.

TA is regarded as the second line of defence as it is not a part of the regular army. Its main role is to support the regular army in times of emergency or dire need. TA has achieved some remarkable feats in various emergency operations such as natural calamities, wartime rescue work, assisting regular forces in maintenance and many more.

Joining the Territorial Army is a great opportunity for those defence enthusiasts who somehow couldn’t join the regular army. You can perform your civil as well as defence-related duties while serving in TA. This can fulfil their desire to don the olive green. Many celebrities are part of Territorial Army such as Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Abhinav Bindra, Kapil Dev, Mohan Lal, Anurag Thakur, Sachin Pilot, Deepak Rao and many such personalities.
